The more we see something, the more we trust it

Description

The Mere Exposure Effect is one of the most widely used techniques in advertising and marketing.

Frequent repetition makes people believe. Familiarity is not easily distinguished from the truth.

It's also known as the Familiarity Principle - human tendency to favor things that we’re familiar with.

Research:
The effect has been observed in an experiment in which people were shown nonsense characters that looked like Chinese symbols, with a task to guess the meaning. The meanings were more positive after people had been shown the same symbols several times as subconsciously, people became more familiar with these symbols.

Application

Repetitive Advertising

Regularly displaying ads across various digital platforms (such as social media, search engines, websites, and email newsletters) can increase brand familiarity. Seeing a brand's logo, colors, and messaging repeatedly helps embed the brand in the consumer's memory. This repetition doesn't need to be aggressive; even subtle and consistent appearances can be effective.

Content Marketing

Consistently producing and sharing valuable content (like blog posts, videos, podcasts, infographics) can familiarize audiences with a brand's voice and values. Over time, as consumers regularly encounter and consume a brand's content, they may develop a preference for the brand due to the mere exposure effect.

Social Media Presence

Regularly engaging with users on social media platforms helps to maintain and increase brand visibility. This includes not only regular posts but also interactions in the comments, stories, live streams, and other features that keep the brand in front of the audience. Over time, this can lead to increased brand preference due to repeated exposure.

Remarketing Campaigns

Remarketing involves targeting ads to users who have previously interacted with your website or app. By showing these users targeted ads based on their past behavior, a brand can increase familiarity and comfort with its products or services. This strategy relies on the mere exposure effect to convert previous visitors into customers.
