Curiosity Gap

People have a deep desire to seek out missing information

Description

The curiosity gap is the space between what we know and what we want or even need to know.

By creating a curiosity gap, you're teasing people to look inside of what you're offering.

The curiosity gap can be used to compel people to click on a blog post they see on Twitter, an ad on Facebook, or a marketing email in their inbox

Research:

Copyhackers used the curiosity gap to help increase conversions for MadMimi’s Gold Plan, their most expensive plan. They did this by showing the prices for the other plans while excluding the gold plan’s price on the page. This layout change increased conversions by 927%.

Application

Email Subject Lines
Craft email subject lines that hint at intriguing information or exclusive offers without revealing all the details. For example, "You Won't Believe What's Inside Your Box This Month!" This approach encourages recipients to open the email to satisfy their curiosity about the contents of the box.

Social Media Teasers
Use social media posts to tease upcoming products, events, or content without giving away all the details. A post could say, "Something big is coming your way. Can you guess what it is?" accompanied by a shadowy image or a partial reveal. This tactic engages followers, encouraging them to comment with their guesses and check back for the reveal, thereby increasing engagement and anticipation.
