People remember things that come first and last more clearly
Description
The recency effect is our tendency to remember the first and the last piece of presented information best.
If you are trying to memorize a list of items, the primacy & recency effect means you are more likely to recall the first and the last items from the list.
Primacy Effect Research:
In 2007, researchers sought to find how important list order was when online stores curated a list of recommended items. The results found that consumers were 2.5x more likely to prefer the 1st recommended item on the list compared to the rest.
Recency effect Research:
In a study to determine how much list order can impact consumer’s clicks. They did this by place a 4 row by 2 column list of items and measured which item received the most clicks.
The very first item in the top left corner got the most clicks, at 9.2%, consistent with research done on primary effects. But the last item in the list, on the bottom right corner, got the second most clicks at 7.7%. This is why it’s important to place your most important information at the top or bottom of a list.
