Sometimes simplifying too much, make things more complex

Description

Tesler's Law, also known as The Law of Conservation of Complexity, states that for any system there is a certain amount of complexity that cannot be reduced.
Every application must have an inherent amount of irreducible complexity.

Research:

An example of Tesler’s Law in effect would be on a flight-agency website such as American Airlines. They identified the necessary steps the user needs to complete a search for available flights: They must input their return and departure dates, their departure and arrival location, and the number of passengers.

To simplify the process they only include the minimum amount of necessary information before moving forward to the next step.

Application

Simplifying User Interfaces
By applying Tesler's Law, digital marketers can work to shift complexity away from the user interface to the backend of the website or application. This means creating more intuitive, user-friendly interfaces that require less effort from users to navigate or complete tasks, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter. By reducing the visible complexity that users have to deal with, companies can enhance user engagement and conversion rates, as the overall user experience is improved. Behind the scenes, developers and designers handle the complexity to ensure the front-end remains as simple as possible for the user.
