People tend to have an irrational trust in the opinions of authorities
Description
People have the tendency to attribute greater accuracy to the opinion of an authority figure and be influenced by that opinion.
The term authority figure includes teachers, politicians, police officers, bosses, influencers, etc.
Research:
In the Milgram experiment, participants were paired up and divided as teachers and students. The draw was fixed for the whole time. Students (actors) had to learn word pairings and were then attached to a fake electroshock machine–although they weren't aware it's not working. The teachers controlled the machine and were assisted by a person dressed in a scientific outfit, acting as an authority figure. The "scientist" encouraged teachers to shock their partners, up to a really dangerous level.
62.5% of participants finished the experiment (reaching the dangerous-level voltage), because they assumed the "scientist" is competent and of an authoritative nature. Very few participants questioned the ethics or morality of the orders.
The conclusion was that people will follow authorities' orders even if they are morally questionable.
Application
Expert Reviews and Testimonials
Digital marketers often feature expert reviews and testimonials to leverage authority bias. By showcasing that a product or service is recommended by professionals or industry experts, they can increase consumer trust and credibility, persuading potential customers that it is a wise choice.
Professional Endorsements in Content Marketing
In blog posts, articles, and white papers, marketers can apply authority bias by citing endorsements from recognized authorities in the field. For instance, a cybersecurity company might publish content featuring quotes or research from renowned security experts to validate their points and products.
Certifications and Awards
Displaying certifications, accreditations, and awards on websites and in advertising materials exploits authority bias by aligning the brand with established and respected institutions. This implies a level of endorsement and quality that can sway consumers to trust and choose their offerings over competitors'.
