Pseudo-Set Framing

People are more tempted to complete items or tasks that are part of a group

Description

Grouping items or tasks together as part of a “set” motivates people to complete it.

The feeling of incompleteness motivates people to persist until the pseudo-set has been fulfilled.

Research

Group A was presented with images of one, two, or three loose beers with no product packaging, and then asked how many additional bottles they’d want to buy.

Most said they’d purchase either nothing more or the number needed to add up to six, representing a traditional six-pack.

Group B was presented with a four-pack container, pre-filled with one, two, or three bottles.

Most of them replied they would purchase only the extras needed to fill all four slots.

Conclusion: set up your product packaging.

Application

Loyalty Programs
By framing loyalty rewards as a set of milestones or achievements, businesses can encourage customers to increase their interactions or purchases to complete their "collection." For example, a coffee shop app might show a digital stamp card where each purchase gets a stamp, and completing the set (e.g., 10 stamps) rewards the customer with a free drink. This encourages repeat purchases as customers are motivated to fill their stamp card.

Product Bundles
E-commerce platforms can create themed product bundles, presenting them as a set that provides a complete experience. For instance, a skincare brand might offer a "Summer Essentials Set" that includes sunscreen, aloe vera gel, and a hydrating mist. Customers are enticed to buy the full set to ensure they have the complete solution for summer skincare, leveraging the appeal of acquiring a complete set rather than individual items.
